CAs often have to interact with clients, stakeholders etc. who are uncomfortable and not too familiar with financial talk. You have to put them at ease and explain financial concepts, including financial jargon to them lucidly so that they are able to understand easily. This will help them to build trust and confidence in you and your expertise and also reduce misunderstandings. Verbal communication can either be through face-to-face physical meetings, telephonic conversations, video-conferencing, speaking to a group etc. Verbal communication could be daunting to many people who can communicate through other means, but who struggle by mumbling or stammering sometimes while speaking to a group or with strangers. This can be overcome effectively through proper training and practice.  


More than verbal communication, non-verbal communication plays a huge role in your job. People tend to pick up a lot of cues from your sense of dressing, facial expressions, gestures, mannerisms and other body language. These subtle physical signs can give away a lot of information about the kind of person you are, your confidence, your level of enthusiasm etc. which are hard to fake. This makes a critical difference while dealing with situations like persuading another person to see your viewpoint, important negotiations, closing deals or signing contracts.


While making reports, such as cash flow statements, balance sheets or income statements, you should make sure that your target audience understands it without requiring much explanation in words. You have to make sure the information in graphs, charts, pictures etc. that you use in reports and statements to explain financial matters are as brief and clear as possible to your audience, including ones who don’t have a strong background in financial studies.


Proposals, plan-of-action strategies, memos, notices, financial reports, emails, texting, messaging through Whatsapp etc. should be thoughtfully written so that there is no misunderstanding or confusion. Without any verbal or non-verbal aid, it becomes difficult for the receiver to understand your emotions or tone of language for the intended message that you send. Hence, it becomes more of a responsibility on your part to communicate using effective words consciously with minimum errors.

A few general, but important communication tips are:

Listen: Communication is not a one-way, but a two-way function. Listen actively to what the other person says without interrupting too often and show interest in their ideas and opinions.

Show adequate confidence: This would mean displaying to the other person that you know what you are doing and that you can handle your tasks.

Display appropriate body language: Shake hands with a firm grip, but not too tightly. Make use of smiles and eye contact to show a friendly and trustworthy disposition.

Proper dressing: Dress as per the requirement of the occasion. Wear neat and clean clothes with colours that are not too garish to show respect for your job and your workplace.

Use visuals wherever required: When you use visual aids such as pictures, charts etc. along with your words to convey your message, you increase the chances of comprehension and better engagement with your audience.

Talk effectively: Do not use verbal abuse and avoid using harsh, angry tones, even in an argument. Maintain your dignity; keep your language receptive and positive. Don’t beat around the bush and keep your talks short and simple to show that you value your time as well as others.
